It had only been a matter of time before Bruce Banner lost his fight with the Hulk.
That had always been somewhere buried in the back of the SHIELD files, that Banner would eventually, and likely in a spectacular manner, be washed away by the sheer force of the Hulk. The fact that the two of them had somehow coexisted in Banner’s very human body and mind for so long was a medical miracle that no one had questioned.
SHIELD had just made backup plans. That’s what they did. Contingency plans and worst case scenarios, paperwork and files and powerpoint presentations. SHIELD was always waiting for a point of failure, and The Avengers Initiative was no different. Eventually, and everyone knew it, the Avengers would fall apart. SHIELD had plans for when that happened.
Phil Coulson’s name was on the majority of those plans as the primary author.
It made sense. He had interacted with the majority of them more than most SHIELD agents, and, with the exception of Fury, far more than anyone else in the chain of command. Even before being assigned as their liaison, he’d started planning for when one, or all of them, turned on SHIELD, each other, or the world.
Some days, Phil Coulson hated his life.
